UTM Parameters Best Practices: A Naming Convention That Survives Every Channel: Tracking guide from the Trakinit blog
On this page

UTM parameters are the labels on your traffic. When they're consistent, every report groups correctly. When they're not, "Facebook", "facebook" and "fb" become three channels and nobody trusts the numbers.

The three UTMs that matter most

  • utm_source: where the visit came from. The platform or publisher: meta, google, tiktok, newsletter, the-daily-show.
  • utm_medium: what kind of channel: cpc, social, email, sms, podcast, affiliate, ctv, qr.
  • utm_campaign: which campaign, as one stable name: bfcm-2026, spring-launch.

utm_content and utm_term are optional; use them for creative and keyword variants.

Rules that prevent messy data

  1. Lowercase everything. Trakinit lowercases source and medium, but your other tools may not.
  2. Hyphens, not spaces. Spaces turn into %20 and break copy-paste.
  3. One name per campaign. Don't rename mid-flight; the history splits.
  4. Source is the platform, not the format. meta with medium cpc, not source facebook-ads-carousel.
  5. Write it down. Share a one-page convention with every agency and creator.

Examples by channel

  • Paid social: utm_source=meta&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=spring-launch
  • Creator post: utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=creator-jamie
  • Newsletter: utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=oct-drop
  • Podcast vanity URL: utm_source=podcast&utm_medium=audio&utm_campaign=founder-interview
  • TV QR code: utm_source=ctv&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=q4-spot

What happens without UTMs

If a visit has no UTMs, Trakinit falls back to a click ID, then the referrer. Search engines, social networks, webmail and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity are recognized automatically. Learn more in AI search traffic attribution.

UTMs plus click IDs

UTMs label campaigns; click IDs identify individual clicks. Use both: UTMs for clean reporting, click IDs for exact matches.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Tagging internal links. UTMs on links within your own site overwrite the original source of the visit. Only tag links that bring people in from outside.
  • Changing names mid-campaign. Renaming a live campaign splits its history into two rows.
  • Using source for the format. Keep format details in utm_content, not in source or medium.
  • Different conventions per agency. One shared document prevents most messy data.

A naming template you can copy

Use this pattern everywhere: utm_source={platform}, utm_medium={channel type}, utm_campaign={yyyy-mm-name}, utm_content={creative-or-variant}. For example, utm_campaign=2026-11-black-friday sorts chronologically in every report.

Frequently asked questions

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

In most tools, yes. "Facebook" and "facebook" become different sources. Trakinit lowercases source and medium for you, but keep everything lowercase anyway so other tools agree.

Do UTMs hurt SEO?

No, as long as you only use them on inbound marketing links and your pages declare a canonical URL. Search engines then index the clean URL.

Do I still need UTMs if ad platforms add click IDs?

Yes. Click IDs identify individual clicks, while UTMs label campaigns in a human-readable way. Together they give you exact matches and clean reports. See click IDs explained.
